Lord's Supper: Meditations for DisciplesSometimes the Lord's Supper can seem boring, repetitious, or practically meaningless, providing a merely sentimental anchor to your tradition. But communion, or Eucharist or Mass, as some call it, should be more than a formal ritual. It should be invested with great meaning for you and me.

This book provides meditations on a dozen of the rich themes that underlie the Lord's Supper. This isn't a doctrinal study in the sense of dogmatic propositions to believe. However, since "doctrine" really means "teaching," the book will instruct you in what the Scriptures themselves teach. While the author shares his own interpretations, he considers alternative understandings respectfully.

The goal of the book is to so illuminate the rich themes of communion so that the next time -- or 100 times -- you serve or partake of the Lord's Supper, you'll recall with joy and love what it really means.

Lord's Supper: Meditations for Disciples provides a spiritual adventure, not unlike scuba diving. Communion, as you are aware, is not a fixed doctrine, but a wonderful and holy mystery into which we immerse ourselves, as we explore and probe its depths. Here are the contents:

  Introduction
1. My Body, My Blood -- Literal or Figurative?
2. Remembering and Proclaiming Christ's Death (Luke 22:19b; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)
3. Being Sharers in the Sacrifice (1 Corinthians 10:16, 18)
4. My Body Given for You (Luke 22:19b)
5. My Blood Poured Out for Many (Matthew 26:28)
6. A New Covenant in My Blood (1 Corinthians 11:25)
7. The Cup of Blessing and the One Loaf (1 Corinthians 10:16-17)
8. Eating His Flesh, Drinking His Blood (John 6:53-57)

10. Preparing Ourselves for the Lord's Supper (1 Corinthians 11: 27-34)
  Appendices
  1. A Brief Glossary of the Lord's Supper
  2. A Brief History of the Doctrine of the Real Presence and Transubstantiation
  3. Songs, Choruses, and Hymns for Communion
  4. Introduction to Textual Criticism
  5. Handouts for Classes and Groups
    Detailed Table of Contents
If you are a pastor, priest, or preacher, a deacon, elder, or lay leader, you'll find the makings of many sermons and communion meditations here. But hopefully this book will help you first feed your own soul on the Heavenly Bread so that you may be spiritually nourished to feed your people.

Lord's Supper: Meditations for Disciples is also suitable for personal and group study. The discussion questions and hand-outs make it ideal for small groups and Adult Sunday School classes.

"Suits busy pastors as it gives a comprehensive and in-depth study of the Lord's Supper. Valuable for preaching material or serious bible study. Well recommended." Rev. Gordon C., South Australia

"Goes far beyond what other teachers do in getting to the heart of each idea, concept, truth, and word. Nothing is left unexplained." -- Gerald M., United Methodist

"Even after many years of serving communion as a pastor, the study helped me gain a deeper love and appreciation for the meaning of this element." -- Elwood O., Church of the Nazarene

"Solid, well thought out, and presented." -- Dr. Richard C., Southern Baptist

"Very easy reading and applicable for the new believer and the seasoned christian." -- Cathy R., Baptist

"Remarkable for its careful research, scholarship, vision, ability to bring the Scripture texts alive for now, rather than peering into something of past ages only. Challenged me in my personal, ongoing relationship with the Lord." -- Bruce McG., Roman Catholic
