READER 1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
READER 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus;
READER 3 he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.
READER 1 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd.
READER 1 He wanted to see who Jesus was,
READER 2 but being a short man he could not,
READER 3 because of the crowd.
READER 1 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
READER 2 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him,
READER 3 "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today."
READER 1 Zacchaeus,
READER 2 come down immediately.
READER 3 I must stay at your house today.
READER 1 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
READER 2 All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a 'sinner.' "
READER 3 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,
READER 1 "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor,
READER 2 and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."
READER 1 Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor,
READER 2 and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,
READER 3 I will pay back four times the amount.
READER 1 Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house,
READER 2 because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.
READER 3 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.
READER 1 For the Son of Man came
READER 2 to seek and to save
