Commentaries

There's no commentary on Revelation that I agree with entirely. But each gives me references to other Bible passages and alternate points of view, carefully argued, by which to test and sharpen my own. Some of the commentaries I have used are below, usually referred to in the text by the author's last name.

Alford, Henry, The Greek Testament (Seventh edition, 1849-1860. reprinted Moody Press, 4 volumes, 1958, 1968). Out of print. His commentary on Revelation is found in volume 4.

Beale, Gregory K., The Book of Revelation (New International Greek Testament Commentary; Eerdmans, 1999). ISBN 080282174X, hardback, 1245 pages. A massive, carefully researched commentary. I'm using this as a current reference and recommend it highly.

Beasley-Murray, G. R., Revelation (The New Century Bible Commentary; Eerdmans, 1974, 1978). ISBN 0802818854, paperback, 352 pages.

Bruce, F. F., "Revelation" in A New Testament Commentary, ed. G. C. D. Howley (Eerdmans, 1969). Out of print.

Caird, G.B., The Revelation of St. John the Divine (Harper's New Testament Commentaries; Harper & Row, 1966; reprinted by Hendrickson, 1993). ISBN 1565630181, paperback, 315 pages.

Hendriksen, William, More Than Conquerors (Baker, 1939, new paperback edition). ISBN 0801057922, paperback, 224 pages. A fascinating amillennial interpretation.

Hughes, Philip Edgcumbe, The Book of the Revelation: A Commentary (Eerdmans, 1990). ISBN 0802836844, hardback, 242 pages. Out of print.

Ladd, George E., A Commentary on the Revelation of John (Eerdmans, 1972). ISBN 0802816843, paperback 308 pages. Ladd was one of my favorite professors in seminary.

Morris, Leon, The Revelation of St. John (Tyndale NT Commentaries; Eerdmans, 1969, revised 1987). ISBN 0802802737, paperback, 256 pages.

Mounce, Robert H., The Book of Revelation (New International Commentary on the NT; Eerdmans, 1977). ISBN 0802825370, hardback 475 pages.

Wilcock, Michael, I Saw Heaven Opened (The Bible Speaks Today; InterVarsity Press, 1975, 1988). ISBN 0877842930, paperback, 223 pages.
