Joshua is the raw account of spiritual Conquest against great odds.
The Book of Joshua is a fast-moving account of a chastened people and their untried leader. Of the Promised Land still populated by warring peoples who know not Yahweh. It is the story of Israel possessing the land through faith in God.
We meet men and women of faith: Rahab the prostitute and Caleb the old warrior. Othniel who conquers a city to win a bride and Acsah his wife who seeks the deep desert wells. And there's Joshua himself, who learns to obey God and see Jericho's walls fall with only a seven-day march and a shout of triumph.
For Christian disciples, the book teaches: listening for God's direction, submission and obedience, God's faithfulness and limitless power, a call to reject the false values of the exiting culture, and the need for relentless spiritual warfare.
The book includes appendices that explore the moral issues underlying the Conquest. The 8-lesson study offers discussion questions for personal enrichment and by small groups and classes. Extensive research contained in the footnotes is a goldmine for teachers and a boon to preachers.
